What is Genius Hour?
In 2011, Daniel Pink published his definitive text, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. In his book, Pink "asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction-at work, at school, and at home—is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world" (amazon.com).
Educators have begun to take this principle touted in the business world (see Google's 20% Time) for their own to implement in their own classrooms. Students who spend time researching, documenting, and producing projects of their own choice also seem to produce more in their traditional academic work. Our goal in this class is to produce
The 20% Project*
1. For the rest of the year, 20% of your time in my class will be spent working on something you want to work on.
2. It has to be some type of learning, and you have to document it.
3. You’ll present your accomplishments to the class twice (and will not be graded on it).
4. That’s it. Have fun. Find your passion. Explore it. Enjoy learning what you want.
