The short story Girl, by Jamaica Kincaid, tells the tale of a young woman who has to live her life in regret after getting an unwanted pregnancy. Of course, a premise as simple as that could be woven into countless of stories each with their own themes and subtexts. This short story does just that. Girl is told in the perspective of the mother as she gives countless orders at the pregnant daughter while at the same time insulting and slut-shaming her. From the perspective alone, one can take out the theme of sexual reputation. As the mom judges her daughter solely on her being pregnant. However, their dynamic in the story also portrays the theme of mother and daughter relationships. Since theirs was probably the social norm back in the day. Speaking of social norms, the theme of society and what is accepted and not is also touched on in the story. Everyone thinks the girl is a slut for getting pregnant, but was she really at fault here? People are very quick to resort to mob mentality and judge someone already being judged.
