In his 2014 poem “When Giving Is All We Have,” Alberto Rios suggests that human generosity and community lead to creation and mutual transformation. He illustrates this idea by juxtaposing the sources of people’s kindness and how it has impacted them, also demonstrating the resilience behind one’s acts. Through the repeated use of the pronoun “we,” Rios further emphasizes the mutualistic, collective nature of giving. Structurally, the poem shifts from discussing the various reasons for and outcomes of giving to the priceless value of these small acts, comparing them to a “diamond in wood-nails,” further highlighting the notion that human kindness and generosity are essential treasures. Rios’ optimistic outlook on community and the power of generosity illuminates his caring, reflective, and uplifting tone.

In her 2021 poem "Ego," Denise Duhamel, a contemporary American poet, explores how at times humans can think they are more important than they actually are. Duhamel supports her idea through the usage of a childhood anecdote about a classroom experience, showing how the speaker once saw themselves as uniquely significant before realizing how small they truly were in the universe filled with billions of people. Duhamel’s purpose is to encourage her readers to realize the limits of their own importance and become more aware of ego and their place in the world. She establishes a reflective and slightly humorous tone for a general audience.

Joy Harjo's "Remember" is a lyrical exhortation to keep the stories of those who have been historically silenced, particularly women. She opens with an invitation to "remember the ones who were never counted, the ones who were never named," immediately framing forgetting as an act of erasure. The poem contrasts the lived experiences of ancestors with the present, noting that the past's echoes shape contemporary identity. Harjo stresses that silence deprives us of crucial lessons and that remembering is a form of resistance. The poem urges us to listen to and honor those who were overlooked.

In the Lyrical poem ‘’A Psalm of Life,’’ H. W. Longfellow motivates readers not to give up on themselves or their dreams. Instead, he urges us to rise up and work hard until we achieve our goals. He persuades individuals to keep moving forward no matter what obstacle they face in their journey. Longfellow suggests that life can be better than we think if we lived in the present. The speaker explains that life has its own purpose; it is more than just putting an end to dreams and goals. He uses the ‘’Grave’’ to symbolize how people are wasting their time on the negative aspects of life instead of believing in themselves. The tone becomes increasingly strong and persuasive as the poem progresses.

In the poem “Remember” written by Joy Harjo presents a deep connection and interaction between humans and the world around them. Harjo wants readers to know that everyone and everything is related to one another. He wants the readers to recognize their own origins. Harjo speaks throughout the poem with a nurturing tone to directly tell the reader they should take into consideration and remember to evoke interactions with one and another and things around you deeply and spiritually. He also uses anaphora to create a rhythmic flow but to also make sure his readers clearly understands the message he's getting across by repeatedly putting the phrase “Remember.”

In the lyric poem “A Psalm of Life,” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow contends that life demands active purpose rather than passive despair. Longfellow develops this idea through inspiring imagery, especially the “footprints on the sands of time,” which represent the lasting impact of our actions and the legacy we leave behind. This emphasizes that life gains meaning when individuals take initiative and make the most of their time. The uplifting and encouraging tone reinforces the idea that we should actively shape our lives while also serving as an inspiration to those who follow.

In the beginning of "A Psalm of Life" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, his tone is very dismissive because the speaker is rejecting the 'mournful' view of life that its an empty dream. Then later on in the poem it becomes melancholic because the speakers starts to accept the reality of mortality, which turns inspirational where the speaker urges readers to live in the moment and not the past or the future.

In the poem, "Ego," Denise Duhamel introduces the idea that over-pride and confidence can change how a person sees themselves and the world. At the beginning, the speaker has a very confident, almost bragging tone, showing how high their ego is. The tone then shifts when the confidence is exaggerated and ironic, making the speaker look insecure with their identity. The speaker shifts their tone to self-awareness in order to recognize their unrealistic attitude initially.
