“But after four years of marriage, Mariam saw clearly how much a woman could tolerate when she was afraid.” (p. 98)
Thematic topic- Spousal abuse

This quote is related to spousal abuse because it shows that she is scared of her husband of 4 years. Mariam's husband emotionally abuses her all the time. He always tells her how a woman should act and he's very judgmental of her. The first time she was pregnant he wouldn't even allow her to pick a name if it was a son. After her miscarriages he started treating her even worse because he blamed her for them. He also was occasionally physically abusive.

She [Mariam] was being sent away because she was the walking, breathing embodiment of their shame.” (p. 48)
Thematic topic- mans inhumanity to man

This quote represents the topic of man's inhumanity to man because it shows how Mariam was being sent away because she is shameful to Jalil and his family. Ever since Mariam was young she was picked on for being illegitimate because her parents weren't married when they had her. Because of this Nana always told her that she would have no place in this world and Mariam feels less than. This shows how people's inhumanity can hurt other people.

“Where I come from, a woman’s face is her husband’s business only.” (p. 70)
Thematic topic- systematic victimization of woman by patriarchal institutions

This quote represents systematic victimization of women by patriarchal institutions because it shows that in this time and place in Afghanistan a woman has no identity without a man. At this point women have more opportunities than they currently do but they are still oppressed by society expectations. Mariam says this in the book after Rasheed tells her he wants her to wear a burqa. Mariam is aware of how things work in this society.

“She [Mariam] was being sent away because she was the walking, breathing embodiment of their shame.” (p. 48)
Thematic Topic - Systematic Victimization of Patriarchal Institutions

This quote is related to Systematic Victimization of Patriarchal Institutions because since she was the outcast of the rich Jalil Khan family, she's seen as a weed or someone who doesn't really fit in. In the beginning of the book, her father got rid of her and her mother so she feels like an illegitimate child in his huge family.

“I thought about you all the time. I used to pray that you’d live to be a hundred years old. . . . I didn’t know that you were ashamed of me.” (p. 55)
Thematic Topic: Man's Inhumanity to man

This quote is related to Man's Inhumanity to man because of the way that Jalil had always felt embarrassed and ashamed of her because she was born out of wedlock but now that she knew it probably felt like a heart-sinking feeling to know that she thought her father isn't proud that he made a mistake.

“But after four years of marriage, Mariam saw clearly how much a woman could tolerate when she was afraid.” (p. 98)
Thematic Topic: Spousal Abuse

This quote relates to Spousal Abuse because of the way that Rasheed had treated her. Ever since she couldn't give him what he wanted: birth children; especially boys. He thought of her as nothing and useless so he treated her cruelly when he forced her to chew pebbles as her punishment.

“But after four years of marriage, Mariam saw clearly how much a woman could tolerate when she was afraid.” (Man’s inhumanity to man) After being married for so long, Marriam has seen the hatred of man and has been abused by her husband for multiple years. She has seen that people treat each other unequally and inhumanely.

“Where I come from, a woman’s face is her husband’s business only.” (Spousal Abuse) They're saying that only someone's husband is allowed to see their face, and this means that they can't be out in the open and free.

“Mariam grieved for this baby, this particular child, who had made her so happy for a while.” (Systematic victimization of women by patriarchal institutions) The theme is connected because she had a miscarriage and she was the only one that cared. It would come to a point where she would have so many miscarriages that she probably wouldnt care anymore

“She [Mariam] was being sent away because she was the walking, breathing embodiment of their shame.” (p. 48)
This quote is related to man's inhumanity to man because it shows that Jalil has always pushed her away from him and his family and he never cared for her and now he's sending her away. Since Mariam was little he hid her away from everyone because he was ashamed of having her because he broke his trust with his three wives and was not married to Nana. Also Nana always made her feel like she was worthless. This shows that other people's shame hurts others.

“I thought about you all the time. I used to pray that you’d live to be a hundred years old. . . . I didn’t know that you were ashamed of me.” (p. 55)

This quote is related to resistance to victimization because Mariam didn't like to believe that Jalil her father felt ashamed of her. Mariam always cared for her father and loved him so much but she never received the same thing back. It hurt her to see that her father always felt ashamed of her and was never proud of her. Her heart sank to hear this and see this because she always looked up to her father.

“But after four years of marriage, Mariam saw clearly how much a woman could tolerate when she was afraid.” (p. 98)
This quote is related to spousal abuse because it shows that all 4 years she lived scared of her husband. Mariam's husband is both mentally and physically abusive towards Mariam. He always tells her how a woman should act and always judges her on everything. When she was pregnant he was happy and said that all he wanted was a boy and she wasn't allowed to pick the name. But she had 7 miscarriages and he started treating her horrible and turned into physical abuse. He even made her chew on rocks because he said that's how her rice felt.
