For all of the scenes of great violence, both physical and emotional, wrought upon or by the characters of the novel, there are, too, many scenes of tenderness, both physical and emotional. What are some of these scenes, and what is it about them that makes them linger with you after you have finished the book? Please refer to at least 6 of the following characters: Mariam, Laila, Tariq, Nana, Jalil, Rasheed, Aziza, and Zalmai in your response.

The first scene that stayed with me after reading the book was when Mariam help Laila to escape the tailbands. This scene made me pause, and just wanted to cry because of the love Mariam has for Laila. The second scene I that stayed with me after reading the book is when tariq and Laila took there relationship to a whole new level. Because they both knew each other from childhood and were even willing to get married in the future. My third scene will have to do with aziza, zalami and tariq been a family and also how Rasheed cared for zalami, like as if he is the “golden child”’. My last favorite scene will be how jalil wrote an apology letter to Mariam for all the wrong thing he has done and also how nana warning to Mariam about independence was true after all.

The scene that stayed with me the most is the scene where mariam killed rasheed. This made me stop and think because mariam has been put through a lot and wanted to help laila and azia leave because rasheed was tormenting them and she realizes that laila and azia would be better off living with tariq and zalami would realize who his real father is, so mariam went ahead and took the sacrifice to kill rasheed and take the consequences of her being locked up then being killed .laila realizes that mariam has been through a lot and she wanted to visit her but mariam was killed by the taliban because of her crime. This is why laila looks up to mariam and is very thankful for her. This also caught me by surprise because rasheed would always try to instill fear into mariam and his wives so that he was the person in control. But because mariam stepped up and killed rasheed while she had the chance, is the only reason why laila and azia are still alive. Mariam was the only female to confess that she had killed her husband and this is why the taliban killed her.

When it comes to Rasheed there tenderness is when they decide to bring Liala in after her house is bombed and both her parents are killed This is a terrible thing to happen to someone and she had nothing so the two of them bringing her in really gave her another purpose and kind of security. Mariam decides to kill Rasheed after a terrible fight and turns herself in to save Liala and the kids. This makes Liala constantly think how nice she was. Liala is all around a good person so to say. Especially when she has to bring her daughter to an orphanage to help her and still visits her all the time despite being beaten in the streets. Nana although she seems mean does everything for Mariam. Everything she does is out of love and kindness even though she says she regrets having Mariam and just wants to protect and prepare her. Jahil shows some kindness building Nana a shack and visiting Mariam but he is a lying and a bad dad. But eventually a little too late she gives Mariam a box with a sorry letter and other things to help her out. Aziza instantly likes Tariq and shows him this love from the start. Zalmai takes time but eventually one night he buries his face in Tariqs shoulder when he comforts him. And finally Tariq, he does everything for Liala from beating bullies to wanting to marry her and flea with a gun to protect her. All of these are signs of tenderness by these characters in the box.

one of the things that happened in the book that sticks with me is how Mariam had to pretend to get pregnant by Rasheed because she was already pregnant by Tariq but Mariam needed a pace to stay and be taken care of so she had to marry Rasheed so they could have sex and she could get" pregnant" then having to cut her finger to mimic the experience a virgin has when having sex for the firs time to make Rasheed think he was her first and she is having his baby.
