In this story Mariam and Laila are in an uncontrollable environment where they don't have much say for being a gender in Afghanistan because of the customs that have been passed down for years. I do agree with the warning by Nana because her daughter is at a innocent age where she hasn't experienced how her life will be revolving around men and it is better to be cautious about it because how much of a hole she can dig herself can be deep and it will be hard to get out of. Afghanistan is strict and life is unfair how she moves on depends on her.

I agree! I feel like Nana could be a toxic mother but she also deep down fears for her daughters safety so it is better to inform her while she is young

I agree, I think Nana loves her, but I think she just wants Miriam to be aware of the society they live in. Since in their society even dogs and cats might have more rights than women. With women also being easily taken advantage of and especially Miriam with her young and vulnerable age. I feel like also Nana could be warning her because I feel like Nana maybe could be thinking she is dying and wants her daughter to be socially aware.

In Afghanistan, women are under stricter rules and don't have a lot of say. Nana's quote lets Mariam know that she needs to remember the kind of society they're in without sugarcoating it. I agree with Nana’s quote because Mariam is getting older and soon enough will have to experience what the real world is going to hit her with. She’s teaching her at a young age so that when the time finally comes, it’s already expected. Instead of waiting for it to happen, Nana’s teaching Mariam to face it head on.

I agree with your argument because even though Nana might no understand what her mom is trying to say.At some point in her life she is going to understand the deeply meaning of this quote. She will eventually learn the her mom only want the best for her.Mariam is old woman as you mention and she already know how evil the world is, she is just trying to prepare her daughter for what is coming.

I agree with the fact that nana is trying to inform mariam on the unfair ways of the world they live in and to make sure she has the right mindset in order to survive as a woman in this society but I also think that nana should keep in mind that mariam is just a young girl and she might not be fully aware of what is being said to her.

In Khaed Hosseini’s “A Thousand Splendid Suns,” Nana’s quote to Mariam,”Learn this now and learn it well, my daughter: Like a compass needle that points north, a man’s accusing finger always finds a woman. Always. You remember that, Mariam,” reflects on the point that Afghanistan is a country male-dominate.This mean the is a country the is mostly control by male and men generally blame women for any kind of mishap or failure that has occurred. An example could be Nana mom and the tragic the occur to her, when she got pregnant and Jalil blame her and kick her out of the house.Another examples is after Mariam got kick out of Jalil house she went back to his father house and his father package her clothes and send her on a bus to Iran.Marian is trying to show Nana the Afghanistan is and evil country the give no right to women and they have to find a way to be able to survive. She just want to teach Nana how hard live is going to be for her due to the fact the she is a woman.

She says the quote as if in their society, men always blame the women and that women are below men. Also, that she wants her daughter to remember so she doesn't fall into a man's lies. This is kind of like our society now where women are below men and women have no power and they have to deal with it such as men in our government telling us women we cannot get abortions when these men aren't even women. Even eventually we could end up in a dystopia like theirs.

I agree I also feel like she's informing her on how their society works so she can always have her guard up because awful things can happen to her.

Her mother Nana says this quote to her daughter Mariam so she understands that in the society they live in is male-dominated and they are not going to be treated fairly or equally due to their gender. I agree with Nana's warning to her daughter because it is true, women In Afghanistan don't even have the right for full education like the men do. They also get punished if a man accuses them of cheating and they aren't able to prove the man wrong. Child marriage is also forced on girls as young as 5 years old and there is no law against it. In conclusion I just feel like she's trying to protect her daughter implying to always try to be on her "best behavior" so a man can't accuse her of anything because she could get punished with torture or even death.

I agree with this because it was crazy when I heard that girls that young can date old dudes and the daughter of Nana doesn't even know about that realm so this warning is a great heads up especially as a protective mother that is powerless to this norm in afghanistan like this person said the mother understands the male dominates in this society and it is really unfair there is no argument there its that simple. I also like how this person clarifies that Nana's daughter needs to be on her best behaviors.

it is terrible that women in Afghanistan are treated in such an unjust way and I agree with the fact that nana is trying to prepare mariam for the society that awaits her.

from what I understand nana is warning Mariam that society unfairly blames women for problem, highlighting the gender inequality and struggles women face in their male-dominated world . This shapes Mariam's understanding of her challenges. Nana's warning to Mariam is valid because society often unjustly blames women for issues, highlighting deep rooted gender biases and the harsh realities women endure. Throughout history women have been blamed for events like which hunts and unfairly judged in situations like workplace harassment. These examples show how society often scapegoats women, validating Nana's warning to Mariam about gender bias and unfair treatment. This persistent pattern underscores the need for societal change and greater gender equality.

I agree. Nana is getting Marium ready for the challenges that women face in society. With all of the advice and warnings that Nana’s giving her, Mariam’s perspective of the world is going to change; getting her ready for the real world. Nana seems very educated on this subject based on her experiences and is making sure her daughter is also educated so her experiences won’t be as brutal for her. You can definitely see how the gender bias in society is starting to affect women.

I agree with this because having an adolescent feminine mind in a male-dominated world could lead to a large amount of vulnerability. Not that there's a problem with vulnerability but men often think logically while women think on their emotions and are more easily to manipulate. Nana went through it herself so why not warn her daughter.

In this story Nana's warning to mariam can show how bad the gender inequality is in their society. where the women are mostly blamed for everything. I agree with Nana's quote because she is trying to warn mariam of what happens in the world as she gets older. Nana's warning is her trying to teach her daughter early that things are unfair in the world, and she will have to be ready for what she will face as she grows up as a woman in an unfair society.

Nana, Mariam's mother, shares this quote with her daughter to highlight the male-dominated society they live in, where women are not treated fairly or equally due to their gender. I agree with Nana's warning because it reflects the reality that women in Afghanistan do not have the same right to education as men. They also face severe consequences if accused of wrongdoing and cannot defend themselves. Additionally, child marriage is imposed on girls as young as five, with no legal protections against it. Ultimately, it seems that Nana is trying to protect her daughter by advising her to always behave well, so she cannot be falsely accused, as the repercussions could be torture or even death.

Nana is teaching Mariam that society tends to unjustly hold women accountable for various problems, emphasizing the gender inequality and challenges women encounter in a male-dominated environment. This perspective influences Mariam's understanding of her own struggles. Nana's warning is significant because it reflects the reality that women are often unfairly blamed for societal issues, revealing gender biases and the issues women face. Historically, women have been faulted for events such as witch hunts and have been unjustly treated in cases of workplace harassment. These instances illustrate how society frequently targets women, reinforcing Nana's message to Mariam about gender bias and inequitable treatment. This ongoing issue highlights the urgent need for societal reform and the pursuit of greater gender equality.

In Afghanistan, their rights for women are practically inadequate. A lot of decisions aren't up to the woman at hand but the men or society around the women. I believe Nana's approach may haven't been the best but the warning, at hand, was substantial for her daughters well being. Growing up in a country surrounded and practically controlled by men, you would want to know how disappointing it can be to even deal with them let alone find love. Nana probably wished she had someone to give her a warning before she got that deep with her Jalil.

In the story women aren't allowed to have much of a say. Women's rights aren't as valued as they should be.Most of the decisions are made from men in the society. That says a lot about the society. Nana's approach towards the warning I believe could have been a little more better executed but I believe the point still got across. Gender equality is very bad in their country. Which makes sense why nana was trying to warn Mariam. Men have dominated the society that it would be less likely for any women to think anything of it in the first place. It would just be normal.

In Afghanistan if women accuse their husband of cheating they need proof to show that he did, and it needs to be demanding proof. On the other hand if a man accuses their wives of cheating everyone believes him with no question asked. This goes back to what Mariam’s mom Nana said to her, “Learn this now and learn it well, my daughter: Like a compass needle that points north, a man's accusing finger always finds a woman. Always. You remember that, Mariam” (Hosseini 6). Nana wants to warn Mariam on how cruel the world can be, especially the country they live in right now. Nana wants the best for her daughter and prepares her for what can come.

In this story it seems like men are more superior than women. Women don't have as much of a say when it comes to things and men will put everything on them. Men won't say when they're wrong and rather put it on the woman. This can relate to our society right now with how a majority of men don't really admit to when they're wrong but try to switch it to make them seem like they're the victims. This quote can relate to a lot of people but it also depends on a man's level of maturity and respect they have for women.

I agree with this post because a lot of men like dominance and feel the need to let a woman know he is the ¨man¨ and from what I can see in this blog is exactly that.

Nana’s quote in A Thousand Splendid Suns shows how unfairly women are treated in society. She tells Mariam that men will always blame women for their problems, just like how Jalil abandoned Nana and never took responsibility. I agree with Nana because, even today, women are often blamed for things that are not their fault. For example, in some places, if a woman is hurt or mistreated, people say it was her fault instead of blaming the person who did it. In jobs, women also have to work harder than men to be treated the same. Even though not all men are like this, many women still face unfair treatment. Nana’s words are sad but true, and they help Mariam understand the world she lives in.

What I understood from this quote was that women were not the superior gender in Afghanistan. Lots of men are like little boys and they think that they are all grown up and that they´re opinions are the only opinions and that their opinions are the only right ones and that woman cannot be right. Men make it seem like women cannot win because men like the dominance just because they are physically stronger that they are mentally stronger.
