These images (all images of Afghanistan occuring during the time period in Part 2) could depict some of the main plot points of the beginning of Part II (Laila's Story) of A Thousand Splendid Suns. While these moments are important, they are by no means the only significant points in these chapters. Here is a link to Getty Images collection of photos of Afghanistan in the 1980s:

¨All those years of aloofness, of cooping herself up and not caring where Laila went and whom she saw and what she thought ... It was unfair. Laila felt like she was no better than these pots and pans, something that could go neglected, then laid claim to, at will, whenever the mood struck" (Hosseini 164). Lailaś shelter of her mother was basically non-existent. When her mother now starts to act like a mother it bothers Laila. It feels like she was just some tool that can be used and abandoned at any time. Her mother was depressed and couldn´t care for her. She never gave advice on love nor helped her when in trouble. Laila had to care for all the chores and cooking. She cared for her mother more than she did for her. So she never had a shelter from her mother as she should have had.

Great quote selection! It typifiers how Laila feels about her mother's role in her life.

"Then a giant roar. Behind her, a flash of white. The ground lurched beneath her feet. Something hot and powerful slammed into her from behind. It knocked her out of her sandals. Lifted her up. And now she was flying, twisting and rotating in the air, seeking sky, then earth, then sky, then earth" (Hosseini 194). Amongst all the fighting in the war, Laila’s home gets destroyed by some explosive weapon. The shelter she grows up in is lost and so is the sense of safety and stability it once provided. Laila’s parents are also gone and besides a few instances from Laila’s mom, her emotional pillars are just suddenly lost and she has nobody else to fall back on. Laila’s incident shows how quickly just anything could happen in the time of war and now Laila is forced to move past this tragedy without any support. In a literal and figurative sense, Laila’s “shelter” is gone and to survive this tragedy, she has to keep moving on.

An important parallel between physical "home" and emotional "home."

"Kabul's day of reckoning had come at last. And when the rockets began to rain down on Kabul, people ran for cover. Mammy did too, literally. She changed into black again, went to her room, shut the curtains, and pulled the blanket over head" (Hosseini 172). In times of war and danger, Lailah's mother, Fariba, goes back in her depressed episodes. She doesn't like the sight of war and having to look over her head all the time, and feels her best when being secured and protected. For example, the day after Najibullah surrendered, Fariba changed into a gradient woman full of life again. She didn't wear black, and put on a cobalt blue linen dress with white polka dots. Suddenly, she finally started cleaning around the house, and even had a celebration. For Fariba, shelter means there is peace and freedom. Freedom that brings reassurance that danger will not bring suffering, especially knowing that war was the cause of her two sons being taken out of this world. So, she clings onto hope, and in times of uncertainty, she feels afraid and goes back to her sulking. So, shelter is important because it provides hope, peace, safety, and reassurance.

In the novel "A Thousand Splendid Suns", Laila's journey shifts dramatically as she's eventually forced to live with Rasheed and Mariam soon after the death of her family. During this time span Laila realizes that even though there are times where life just completely sucks, there are moments where she feels at home. A scene that represents this that really stuck out to me was when Laila began to share all of her pains with Miriam, overtime they built a bond from that place of pain. Having someone for the first time in a long time to talk to about all her woes and worries comforts Laila emotionally and makes her feel strong and valued. Mariam and Laila even come to an understanding that Rasheed is a cruel man and begins to question, "How do people find strength in difficult circumstances?" Is what they have really a good home to live and thrive?

“Maybe it was senseless to want to be near a person so badly here in a country where bullets had shredded her own brothers to pieces. But all Laila had to do was picture Tariq going at khadim with his leg and then nothing in the world seemed more sensible to her” (Hosseini 98). She misses Tariq and wants to see him because she feels close to him and likes him. I understand this passage because it is someone she has known for a long time and felt safe around and I have someone like that. It deepens the character development much further because we can now understand that she feels a connection to Tariq.

Laila starts to miss tariq.she starts doing chores.she talks about how Tariq uses his leg and how he has moved away. She saw Tariq and his new shoes. She went to his house and they had dinner. Together she mentions the uncles and spends time with them also Laila plays a game with Tariq and remembers things her and her father talk about. We see that Laila is being bullied she thinks bout Tariq.Laila talks about good times with her mother. Her mother talks about old Laila doesn't remember her brother, so she

I'll keep it short. "When Tariq was near, Laila felt protected, like a caterpillar encased in a cocoon of warmth and safety". I feel like Tariq serves as an emotional shelter for Laila, which she desperately needs from her mother especially, ever since her mother lost her sons to the war against the Soviets. Laila lacks that kind of emotional support, and she confides in Tariq who kinds of does so.

"He cast us out of his big fancy house like we were nothing to him .he did it happily " This scene evokes the feelings of betrayal ,abondandment ,and humiliation and the fact that he did it happily that's what hurt nana soo much to hate him like that and jalil just pretends in front of Mariam an that shows how heartless nana is towards jahlil.and that he didn't even care he just cast them out .and have his other wives and kids living with him.
