Dana states: "It was that destructive single-minded love of his. He loved me. Not the way he loved Alice, thank God. He didn't seem to want to sleep with me. But he wanted me around—someone to talk to, someone who would listen to him and care about what he said, care about it." (page 180) How does the relationship between Dana and Rufus develop? How does it change? Is it love or is it something else? What are the different levels of love portrayed in Kindred?

Dana and Rufus’s relationship develops as they spend more time together. I feel like as Dana continues to stick by Rufus and be there for him he sees that she cares and shares some type of a special deeper connection towards her. No matter how much Rufus changes and becomes more and more violent Dana never switches up on him or treats him any different. The fact that they are related biologically might have helped for them to have a connection with each other but not a sexual relationship type of connection, a family type of connection. I think it could be love but not an intimate type of love, a friendship/family bond type of love.

Kindred means similar in kind related however kindred spirit is someone who from the very first moment you meet and you have everything about you , I choose Girl by Jamaica Kincaid on 91 &92
you feel at peace yet ?being around her make you feel calmer there will be an immediate sense of relief as your spirit sense that you have found another soul who knows and understands you
