Now that you have read the short story "war" and watched the short film adaptation, please answer the three following questions:
1.     How would you characterize the ending of this story… a realization, a denouement, or an epiphany?

Denouement - after the climax, a gentle restoration of relationships prior to the events in the story

Realization - where a character becomes aware of a reality in his or her life

Epiphany -  a sudden, sharp realization, an awareness of a desire that can never be fulfilled, or "reality"

Explain your answer and describe its effect on the characters' different levels of denial. (100-150 words)

2.     What desires motivate the fat traveler? Explain. Are these in conflict?  (100-150 words)

3.     Why is the atmosphere of the overnight train appropriate? (100-150)

After read the story “war”, I think the ending wasn’t good, so I’ll characterize the ending of the story more fair and happy. So at the end of the story the woman ask the missing teeth guy that is his son really die, instead asking that question, she could of ask “do you have another son that still live with you?”, the man said yes and the woman start to comfort the man about live happy with happy with his other son because every seconds are counted and make sure he make a good decision for every second of his life with his last son. This ending relate to an epiphany because he a strong relationship between him and his son, he always want to live with his son, and maybe this ending will make his desire come true, but the denial of it is that one of his son is gone forever. He said “you can’t give love to one of your child and other is none, you have to give them your love in equal”, so even if he still have one son left, it would make him happy, but it doesn’t make any different that he lost half of his love to his children.
The desire of fat traveler was to move on live happy, because he knew that he want his son, but the country want his son also, so it does really kill him inside, but he try to be strong and live on. Yes, this is a series disagreement between keeping his son and let his son go to the war. He understands that when his son was little, he needs his son to be around, but when his son reach to the age of 20, the country and reality need his son.
The atmosphere of overnight train is appropriate because it suddenly change the story of the fat traveler and the woman and their feeling around. The women was crying, angry, felt uncomfortable that train, while the fat traveler is normal not until he hear about the woman talked about her son’s death. The fat traveler change from comfortable to crying, while the woman was from crying to felt normal again. So the part where the woman and the fat traveler started to change is very important why the atmosphere is important.

1.War ends with two characters experiencing a realization. I believe it is a realization rather than an epiphany, because both the fat man and bulky woman’s minds change over time. You can see how the man’s mind changes even as he is giving his speech. “’…I do not even wear mourning’… his livid lip over his missing teeth was trembling… he ended with a shrill laugh which might have been a sob” (Pirandello). Even as he tries to convince the others on the train that fighting and dying for your country is something they should hold in the highest regard, he has his doubts. The man’s speech has the opposite effect on the woman. She begins her stay on the train grief-stricken, but by the end of the man’s speech she realizes that she should show the same resolve that he and the others passengers show.

2.The fat traveler is motivated by the love for his Country, as well as the respect he has for the young men who give their lives for it. He believes that fighting for your country is a heroic, and that dying for your country is an honor. These two motivations are not in conflict. Throughout the story, he made it clear that Country was what mattered. The fat man even says that Country is more important than love. While his motivations may be misguided, they are certainly not conflicting. Perhaps after his revelation at the end of the story, they will change.

3.The overnight train is an appropriate setting for this story, because it symbolizes the very plight of the passengers. Many of them are grief stricken at the beginning of the story. Some are in denial (the fat man). By the end of the man’s speech, everyone’s previous thoughts have changed. Those that were grieving have accepted that their sons are doing something honorable for their country, which offers them some consolation. The fat man who gave the speech was freed from his pit of denial. Simply put, all of the passengers have taken an important step toward freeing themselves from their sorrow. Much like the train that will soon depart, they will be moving on as well.

1. I would characterize the ending of the story as epiphany. The reason for this is because the ending correlates towards the scene with the fat man breaking down. After the one question from the woman that asked “Then…is your son really dead?” was addressed, the fat man began to look like he suddenly realized that his son was gone forever. The sharp realization and awareness of his desires to have his son alive will never be fulfilled revolves around epiphany. His sudden outburst of grief and tears were caused by the question from the woman, which made him remember the reality that his son was really dead from the war.
2. The desires that motivate the fat man were the love of his country and the desires of his own son. As he discusses with the other parents in the train, he wants everyone (including himself) to realize that their son are needed to help stable their home from corruption. The words from his speech and his statements help comfort the idea of their sons going to war since they are given the free will to do so and accepting the consequences of possible death for protecting what they love. These motives weren’t conflicts since he believed in the statements and how parents shouldn’t rely on having their sons forever.
3. The atmosphere of the overnight train is appropriate because it properly fits the sorrow and dreaded environment during the train ride. Many people were weeping, quite, gloom, and having discomforting and negative emotions about knowing their children being a part in the war and could be or are dead. Despite the fat man stating his reasons of being calm about his son’s death from the war, he was soon exposed to his repressed emotions of the realization of never seeing his son ever again. From beginning to end, there was a sense of grief for one’s loss of their gifts from god.

After reading the short story “War” and watching the short film adaptation I characterize the ending of the story as an epiphany. An epiphany is a sudden, sharp realization, an awareness of a desire that can never be fulfilled, or “reality”, and this is the perfect explanation for the ending of this story, especially in the movie. In the movie, we see Bruno as a young eight year old boy that loves to explore. He has a very big imagination and is full of creativity which leads him to pass his boundaries at their new home. Upon exploring he encounters a concentration camp, which is completely unaware of its true meaning. He starts talking to a little boy the same age, on the other side of the fence, named Shmuel. After numerous meeting Bruno decides to go on the other side, and as a result catches his death. This hit home for the entire family. It was a revelation that opened all of their eyes and revealed to them just how evil and corrupt these concentration camps were. I consider this an epiphany, because it took the death of an innocent child for reality to be exposed to this family. In the short story “War” the ending could too be categorized as an epiphany, as everyone comes to reality and understand that regardless of how many sons you have that participate(d) in the war, if they die it still has a significant effect on them.
The fat man was motivated by the feelings of the children. He believed that them as parents should honor theirs sons decision to fight for their country. Rather than sit there and morn about their loss and argue about their importance; they should be celebrating the fact that they had the courage to do what they couldn’t. “Is Country exists, if country is a natural necessity, like bread, of which each of us must eat in order not to die of hunger, somebody must go to defend it”(Pirandello line 25-27). He looks at the entire situation from a more positive and happy perspective and tries to encourage the other travelers that what these young men are doing are honorable actions that they should be proud to be parents of. Therefore, there is no need to more, instead they should be rejoicing.
The atmosphere of the overnight train is appropriate because it sets the tone for the characteristics of the characters. The train is full of mourning, sorrow and tears of darkness. Everyone is upset of the thought of losing their son at war. They are angry and in denial. Each person has their own cold point of view and bias opinion that no matter what their situation is worse than everyone else’s. However, that is not so. The atmosphere of the train lightens up when the fat man vents about losing his son at war and feeling honored that his son stood up for their country. After hearing this, and coming to reality, they can all continue life, living more positive as they continue their lives in separate directions, just the like the train.

I would characterize the ending of the story “War” by Lungi Pirandello can be realization or epiphany but I will go with realization because the mindfulness of a desire that will never be fulfilled. I say this because I believe that the fat man and the woman became aware of a reality in their life. Both the man and the woman has a mind change which shows their awareness. The man shows realization when the woman asks him if his son is dead. This awareness made him realize that his son is actually dead and the fact of him never being able to see his son again.
The thing that motivates the fat traveler is not only the love of his country but the love of the children as well. He thought that as parents, should honor theirs descendants decision to fight for their country. , “Why then,” continued the fat man, “shouldn’t we consider the feelings of our children when they are twenty? Isn’t it natural that at that age they should consider the love for their Country even greater than the love for us?”. This quote shows that the fat traveler is very passionate for not only the love of his people but of his country too.
The atmosphere of the overnight train was appropriate because everyone is unhappy, depressed and sad of the fact that the young men are going off to fight for the country in the war. The train ride was mourning. It was a journey from meaningless death which is defined as the meaning of a sacrifice for their country. The train ride is like this because all of the passengers have a love on in the war and no one will know who will come back alive. There is no one to blame for this mood on the train, no one is able to control their emotions. Especially when you are letting go of your only child.

1.How would you characterize the ending of this story… a realization, a denouement, or an epiphany?

The way that I would characterize then ending of this story is by realization. I picked realization, because when the man found out by the women that his son was dead, he really didn’t want to believe it. He realized at that moment in time that his son really was dead and that moment of awareness caught his attention to realization. Realization also comes into place when the man was giving a speech on the train trying to convince the others that fighting and dying for our country is a hold against our will. The man felt deep down the doubts in his head, and the women later realizes that she should of just showed the same effort that the man felt and the other passengers on that train. The women realized what the man was actually saying.

After finishing the short story “War” I believe that this story is a great example of an epiphany to ample upon. In this story there are many characters, but the most important are those who lost their children or are close to losing their children because of war. The women who lost their child already knows how it feels to lose a loved one while all these other people have been encountering problems with their children going in and out of horrible situations. The reason to why this short story is a great example of an epiphany is mainly because when the people who already lost their children know what it is like without loved ones, but especially the women who has had their children come home then sent back even after injury is what makes this a sharp realization of how people in different situations can feel.
From the beginning of the short story the fat traveler had believed that his and everyone’s children basically belonged to the government. Later on in the story after talking to the women and others and how he wasn’t able to feel their pain for too long, but their conversations has lead him to have that feeling about his child being gone for a while. The fat traveler had this desire that his son was hopefully still alive, but once the women said “Then… is your son really dead?”, this had changed his hopes into dreams and he started to feel a lot of emotion and cry knowing that his son was gone forever.
The atmosphere of the overnight train is very important in this short story. In the story it starts off as the women crying and nervous and the fat traveler as a calm and unruffled, then leading to a part where the women becomes more worried and embarrassed and the fat traveler becoming devastated and disappointed. When the fat traveler realizes that what the women is telling him he becomes to notice how life can be and the atmosphere for everyone changes after they see the traveler look sad, creating a important situation to occur.

1. After reading the short story, “War” by Luigi Pirandello, I characterize the ending as an epiphany. In the story we see that the fat man changes everyone’s perspective on their sons and nephews going into the war. The fat man and some other passengers make everyone including the bulky come to the realization that their sons and nephews do not belong to them once they turn twenty but belong to the country and that they shouldn’t worry because their boys are content with what they are doing for the country. We realize that the fat man has fully accepted the death of his son because of the message his son sent him. Though his words brought some type of comfort to the woman, it was her question that made the fat man really realize that his son was gone. His son was gone forever. The reality of his son’s death hit him so hard that he sobbed uncontrollably.

2. In the short story we see that the love of the country is what truly motivates the fat traveler but the boys’ duty to the country also motivates him. He states that that even they as parents have more love for their country more than they should for their sons and nephews. He feels like no one should grief over the death of a loved one if that person died from fighting for their country. He is also motivated by young men and their love for their country. In his opinion it is perfectly fine to die if you are satisfied with your loyalty to your country. His desires are not in conflict because they are both geared towards patriotism.

3. The atmosphere of the midnight train can be said to be sorrowful and calmingly peaceful in the beginning. Everyone one the train is able to share or contribute to the plight of the bulky woman. Acceptance of the death of a loved one is the topic of discussion in the train because every single one of them has either a son or nephew who is or has been in the war. They all able to voice out their opinions on the topic of death and the war. The atmosphere somehow changes when reality hits the man hard in the face even though he gets in a really sorrowful mood. The atmosphere is appropriate because it helps everyone on the train connect to one another and they are able to share in dilemmas of others.

1. The ending of the short story “war,” I would characterized it as being a realization because of how the old man finally realized what happened to me. The old man did not want to believe that his son is dead, but he had faced the truth that his son is in fact gone forever. The old man’s level of denial is high because he keeps telling himself and the other people that his son isn’t dead, but when the woman asks him about his son being really dead, he soon realized that it is true and not a lie. He couldn’t accept why it came to be.
2. The desires that motivate the fat traveler were the love of his country and the love for his kid. These desires are in conflict because due to the fact that the fat traveler stated that their love for their country is far greater than the love for their sons. He would take the place of his son so that he could be in the frontlines for the war. He shared that their son don’t belong to them, but to the country and they belong to their sons.
3. The atmosphere of the overnight train is indeed appropriate for the story. This is because it shows the grief and sadness of all the passengers that were on the train. They were not happy being on there because everyone was talking about their son being sent to the front to fight in the war. Even though they were in sorrow about their son gone to the war, they accepted it because their son is doing it for their love of the country. Many of them do not want to believe that their son to be dead and stay in denial because their son is all they have to love except for the country.

1) By the end of the short story “War” by Luigi Pirandello I would characterize the ending as an epiphany. I would characterize it as an epiphany because both the fat man and the bulky women experienced a sharp realization. Although both were different they experienced a reality in which there desires could not be fulfilled. The fat man after hearing the question asked from the women realized that his son was really dead and no matter how much his desire was to believe his son died a hero it wasn’t the truth. This is what the father realized. He lost his son and he will never return ands that’s why he began to cry. On the other hand the woman realized her son was still alive just that he was sent to war.
2) In the short stories the fat man has some desires that motivate him. Those motivations are his love for the country and the pride of his son. Throughout the short story the fat man expressed to the other travelers that dying for the country was heroic. That if he were his sons age he would gladly give his life for his country. He convinced himself that the death of his son was a proud thing for a parent. So these motivations are in conflict because by the end of the story he broke down crying which shows that he didn’t really believe anything he said, but was only saying that to lie to himself.
3) The atmosphere in the overnight train was very appropriate. Throughout the story it was gloomy and had a sense of grief all around. It showed how devastating it feels to torn be from your loved ones as well as how people react with the death of a loved one. The atmosphere helped create a stage were the characters seem to be choked by it, like the women uncomfortable in her jacket. Except for the fat man that was almost like a light in the darkness. However in he succumbed to the gloom of the atmosphere because h began the break down and cry for is son. (Word: 356)

1) I think the man had more of an epiphany than a realization. He was trying to convince the people on the train that there's nothing to cry about and that they shouldn't be sad that their son's are at war the whole time. Then all of a sudden he started crying because it hit him that he should be sad. The women on the other hand had more of a realization. She slowly realized that all the grieving and crying that she was doing wasn't needed because it happens; death is apart of life.
2) What motivates the traveler is his admiration for the men that fight for the country. People join the army to fight for the country so others can live normal lives in peace. They are in conflict because a lot of people die for others to have peace and that isn't fair to the men fighting.
3)it is appropriate because it shows the mood with crappy weather. It shows how sad everyone is on the train and that no one wants to be there because it makes them think of their sons fighting for the county.

In beginning of the story most of the characters were quarreling about who was suffering the most pain after their children were sent off to battle fields. All the characters showed some kind of emotions but the bulky woman was one of the main characters who seemed to be really affected by it. After analyzing the short story, the ending was about realization. This is because, the fat man at the start of the story was in complete denial and kept talking about how an honor it was for his son to be Sent to the front line at war. At the end of the story, the bulky woman came up with a question that changed the Fat man’s actions entirely, “Is Your Son Really Dead”? This question made the fat man realize that his son who died at battle field was actually gone forever. His emotions changed all of a sudden and began to sob.
The fat man in the story is really motivated by the love for his country. In the story, he kept arguing about how an honor it was for a young adult (twenty) to be sent to war. He even compared the love that a parent have for their child to that of a country. He came up with an idea that as parents, the love for their Country is great but even stronger and richer than the kind of love that they show towards their children. Overall he thinks that every parent should cherish the moment about their children being sent off to war Instead of Grieving and mourning about it.
The atmosphere of the overnight train is important because it sets the tone for the story and also indicates unity. In the beginning of the story, the characters emotions were all over the place especially the bulky woman. As the progressed they started to argue about who was suffering the most. Whiles the story was coming to an end, they noticed that every parent was going through something, it didn’t really matter if two of your sons were sent off to war or one. The atmosphere of the train symbolizes togetherness. (Word Count 361)

1. The ending of the story is realization the fat man did not realize he had lost a son forever until the tiny man whom his son have been taken to the front asked "....Is your son really dead? This brought an awareness that his son was gone forever, and he is not going to set his eyes on him again. The fat man at the beginning of the story told the other passengers to stop sobbing and mourning about their sons taken to the front, but rather be happy. This is because when their sons die, they die happily.
2. What motivated the fat traveler was his son being taken to the front. He was in denial. He had the perception that their sons were herbs, and they are taking to the front to work and save their country. For this reason, he does not need to worry about anything. He only needs to be proud about them.
3. The outmosphere of the overnight train is appropraite because this was the time these travelers on a train had the opportunity to express their views and share their challenges, and also argued about their sons taken to the front. Some had not even seen their son for years and they could not do anything about it. Finally, this fat traveler realizes he was not going to see his son anymore. This scene put the other passengers in so mud grief as they face reality of life and the situation they were in at that point in time.

Student 15

I would characterize the ending of the story as epiphany. It took the big old man only one question to bring him back to reality. In such a short period of time he was brought back to reality and then suddenly he realized that he could not deal with the fact that is son dead and never coming back and he could no longer deal with not mourning over the situation any longer. He dealt with his lost the way he should have in the first place. The ending of this short story happen to be rhetorically, and falls into place with everyone else’s situations, which is simple facing reality and whatever it comes along with even though it might happen for you to hate it.
The fat travelers desires where motivated by more than one reason; one was by the fact that when their children are born they don’t belong to them. Another is once their sons become twenty. It is the duty of their son to serve their country in war as it is a necessity for the good of the country and not for the family to love and cherish. The fat traveler was basically saying no matter how they complain of the reason why their son has to fight for the country and the fact that they don’t want them to be unnecessary. In the end these reasons will always be there as motivation and reason why they should not mourn.
The atmosphere of the overnight train is appropriate because everyone in the train has something in common; which is them all dealing with their sons been in the front line of battle, others dealing with just taking care of their sons and then sending them until they all end up dead. Having them all take about their similarly depressing situation makes the overnight train ideally appropriate. Another reason is because of their situation it makes it easier to relate to people with the similar issues in order to relate and hear others views and how they cope with all the stress and not knowing if their children is not coming back home to them.(word count 359)

1. I believe at least two of the characters experience a realization, which is when a character becomes fully aware of a reality in his or her life. The fat man, who stated that their children belong to the Country, not to the parents, knew that his son was dead. However, it seems as though he was in denial about the loss of his son. It wasn't until the end of the short story when the woman asked if his son was really dead that he showed emotion toward the situation. He began to sob uncontrollably. I believe this realization altered his denial levels. When he broke down in tears in the short story, his denial levels decreased simply because he was finally facing the fact that his son was dead.
The woman in the bulky coat also experienced a realization by the end of the short story. By listening to what the fat man was saying in regards to the sons and nephews leaving for war, she had a realization of her own. When listening to the fat man's explanation, the woman began to realize that her son was at least still alive. She knew that he would be going to war regardless of what anyone did. She was able to face the fact that she may or may not lose her son to this war. Thus, her denial levels also decreased.

2. The fat traveler was motivated by the love for his Country. He had respect for the young men who risk their lives for the good of the Country as well. The fat traveler believed that fighting for the Country would be an honor, and dying for the Country would be beyond heroic. It doesn't seem as though these motivations are in conflict however. The fat traveler made it very apparent that the Country was the most important thing to fight and potentially die for. The Country had the top priority. The Country is even more important than love, according to the fat man. I do not believe that these motivations are conflicting. They are merely just his own opinions in his own clouded mind. After his realization at the end of the short story, it would be interesting to see if and how his mind would change about the situation.

3. The atmosphere of the overnight train is appropriate because it symbolizes the captivity of sorrow. The train is filled with worried parents and caregivers, who want nothing more than safety for their loved ones entering the war. In the overnight train, the passengers are uncomfortable, gloomy, and extremely negative, as well as exhibiting high levels of grief. The atmosphere of the train allows the passengers to share their thoughts, opinions, and worries about their sons and nephews in or going into war. The overnight train allows for a greater connection between the grieving passengers.

1. I would characterize the ending of the story to be a realization because both the bulky woman and the fat man change their point of view. When the bulky woman asked the fat man if his child was really dead his tone transitioned from being calm about the situation to being sadden. It is evident when the author expresses that “he ended with a shrill laugh which might have been a sob.” ( Pirandello) The man’s overpowering speech started to sink in to the bulky woman. She was no longer struggling under that big goat. His speech motivated her to change her mind set that her son going to war didn’t only have to be viewed as a con but it could be viewed as a con too. He was fighting for his country.
2. Based on the reading it is evident that the fat man was motivated by the love and passion of his country. He found it admirable that young man would place his life at risk for the love of his country. It was honor to know someone so heroic such as that. His motivation didn’t appear as conflict to me.
3. The atmosphere of the overnight is appropriate because a train symbolizes movement. These people all come from didn’t backgrounds and they debate about the directions of their children. They all seem to be in denial about what is right for their children. They are only thinking in terms of their selves. The fat man appealed in denial the most because at first he says one thing but once the bulky lady asks him a question he contradicts into reacting another.

After reading the short story "War", I'm making the educated decision/guess that the fat man came to realization at the end of the story. Also, the bulky woman had an epiphany. The fat man realized that his son really is dead, and that he was just in very deep denial. The bulky woman was different and had an epiphany because it came clear to her that she doesn't have it as bad as she though. She still has her son, even though he's heading off to war to fight, at least he isn't dead. The fat traveler is motivated by a few specific things. One is the respect and pride that he has for the men who serve their county. Also the love of his country, which he makes it clear on the train.

After reading the short story “War” by Pirandello, I would characterize the ending of this story as realization. It’s true that the fat traveler made the whole bunch of people realize that his son was dead, but he said it without grief. The fat traveler stated that “everyone should stop crying: everyone should laugh, as I do…or at least thank God- as I do-because my son, before dying, sent me a message saying that he was dying satisfied at having ended his life in the best way he could have wished” (line 20-25). In way, he’s come to his senses that his son died happy, but came into realization that he would never ever see his son once the question asked by the women was said and he became distorted.
The desires that motivate the fat traveler are from his previous statements when he talked about the Country. He made a powerful statement in which he commented that children take a part of their parents life’s with them. “We belong to them but they never belong to us” (line 15-20). What eases the fat traveler from the other people is that he knows his son died satisfied dying the best way he wished. It is true that the fat traveler had taken time out of his life most likely raising his son and teaching him all sorts of things, but as well as knowing he did a good job with his boy before he died.
The atmosphere of the overnight train is appropriate. Let’s be serious here, is it not true that the most thinking come into mind at night? Haven’t you ever had nights where you couldn’t fall asleep? Well this atmosphere makes everything appropriate since some serious arguments with much thought are said and it fits the setting just right. With such distortion and grief over the war, the night time is just fitted for the atmosphere of the short story. Personally, the day time when the sun is out and bright seems quite joyous and unusual for it to be the atmosphere for the short story. W.C. 349

2. What desires motivate the fat traveler? Explain. Are these in conflict? The desires that motivate the fat traveler is his country, he feels sad because his son got taken to the front, he was in denial. He thinks that anyone should fight for there . 3. Why is the atmosphere of the overnight train appropriate? yes I do think that the atmosphere of the overnight train is appropriate, because I feel that you can think better when the night comes. You have more thoughts and opinions at night, I mean that's my opinion. You have a train full of worried parents, of course there going to talk about there feelings and emotions to each other.

1. I characterize the end of the “war” as Epiphany because at the end of the story the one who brought up the whole situation was the one who came down at the end and broke down in tears. “I do not even wear mourning’ said the man but he came to the realization that his son was really gone and that when everyone began to sob because the kid don’t belong to them they belong to their country which was not fair because they feel that it is not fair they would take their place if they could in the front line.
2. The desire of the fat man was loving his country and the thought of his son and what he died for his country he was there to comfort other people because as he said parents desire there country more than there owe kid which shows that the owe there kids life to their country and that they should respect it even though that it hurts so much they still respect that fact the three kids are fighting for their country which they should be proud of and motivates them.
3. The atmosphere of the midnight train was appropriate also peaceful and powerful because you learn the situation of each character in which they are having a conversation on who has the worst position. At the end they realize who has it worst but they all have something in common there losing their kids to a country they love. They all have someone they love in the war more than other but there both losing their family’s member left and right which hurts parents so much that they can even sleep at night or nothing anything in their life because when there kid dies they stay in that state of mind they can’t do nothing else but sob.
