In the book Mariam starts to realize how much she had tolerated over the years, “But after four years of marriage, Mariam saw clearly how much a woman could tolerate when she was afraid.” (p. 98). This shows that Mariam is in a spousal abuse because when she was afraid of Rasheed all she could do was sit there and tolerate the pain and suffering Rasheed is doing to her. An example was at the end of part one where Rasheed forced Mariam to eat grits and pebbles and made her spit out blood and broken fragments of her two molars.

“She [Mariam] was being sent away because she was the walking, breathing embodiment of their shame.” (p. 48)
- Man’s inhumanity to man
The wives are being very cruel to Mariam only because she is the "odd" one out. Mariam is just a child and it's her father's doing but the wives stick by his side. She hasn't done anything wrong but without losing everything they have, they resent Mariam instead of Jalil.

“Where I come from, a woman’s face is her husband’s business only.” (p. 70)
- Spousal abuse
Jalil's talking about how it's embarrassing to see how other men "lost control" of their wives because they are uncovered so he brings Mariam a burqa so she can be covered. This shows the beginning of how he wants to have control over Mariam. Being controlling over someone else, can lead to worse things.

“But after four years of marriage, Mariam saw clearly how much a woman could tolerate when she was afraid.” (p. 98)
- Spousal abuse
Mariam is realizing how much abuse she has gone through in her marriage. She has tried everything to make her husband happy but he doesn't care about any of her efforts. She has been more afraid of him since the death of their baby.

“Where I come from, a woman’s face is her husband’s business only.” (p. 70)
-Systematic victimization of women by patriarchal institutions
Culture and society is represented through this quote. Mariam is shown that she doesn't have any control in her relationship. Rasheed forces her to wear a "burqa" to cover up her face. Rasheed expects Mariam to act as a perfect "house wife", Mariam isn't in love with Rasheed but this is what's called an arranged marriage by your parents.

“Mariam grieved for this baby, this particular child, who had made her so happy for a while.” (p. 93)
-Resistance to victimization
Mariam was excited about her new baby. Mariam expected the baby to bring her relationship closer. She unfortunately lost the baby, at first she blamed Rasheed then God. Rasheed didn't once comfort Mariam he didn't want to speak on the miscarriage.

“But after four years of marriage, Mariam saw clearly how much a woman could tolerate when she was afraid.” (p. 98)
-Education for women
During this part of the story Mariam tolerance level was tested, she is petrified in disobeying Rasheed. Mariam is constantly feeling uncomfortable as she is being labeled as her husband's property. Mariam felt as if the baby might bring her and Rasheed closer. Sadly she had a miscarriage and has been more terrified of Rasheed since. After being given an awful meal Rasheed poerly forced Mariam to chew on pebbles causing her teeth to break.

Spousal abuse.
- As time went on with the marriage between Rasheed and mariam the marriage starts to get worse with Rasheed starting to beat over the things that annoy him and mariam being unable to bear a child and treating her worse to the point that he made her chew on pebbles.

“She [Mariam] was being sent away because she was the walking, breathing embodiment of their shame.” (p. 48)
Man’s inhumanity to man
- ever since the wives of jalil have known about nana and Mariam they have been treating the poorly because marima is the legitimate child of Jalil and nana being a housekeep they never saw her as an equal to give respect to. The wives saw nana and mariam has things below them that they had jalil send them to live somewhere else and even forced mariam to marry rasheed even though mariam declined and their age gaps where very large with marim being 14 and rasheed being 37

Where I come from, a woman’s face is her husband’s business only.” (p. 70)
- Spousal abuse
when rasheed brings mariam to kabal they see many woman dressing up up casual so when rasheed does not like and thinks that the husband to those wives no longer of control of their wives so he buys mariam a burqa so that she can cover her face. this was Rasheed first step to controlling Mariam .

In a thousand splendid suns Mariam says “Where I come from, a woman’s face is her husband’s business only.” (p. 70) This is a form of systematic victimization of women by patriarchal institutions as she has no freedom to act on free will and the way people perceive her is held to a great power to please people for the sake of her livelihood in the hands of her husband. Additionally, “She [Mariam] was being sent away because she was the walking, breathing embodiment of their shame.” (p. 48) This is a form of resistance victimization as they single out Mariam making her a direct result to blame her for the things that had been taken out on her. Lastly, “But after four years of marriage, Mariam saw clearly how much a woman could tolerate when she was afraid.” (p. 98) This demonstrates the corrupting influence of absolute power to use fear and manipulation with acts of violence against Mariam in order to gain and feel inferior.

The quote from page 55 in ATSS follows the theme of resistance to victimization. This quote is Mariam talking to Jalil, expressing her feelings and thoughts on how he treated her and he kinda just keeps brushing it off and treating it like he couldn't hear her although these actions of his resulted in her leaving her mother and then her mothers death. This is a great representation of how people such as Jalil kind of just sensor out things they don’t want to hear or own up to.

The quote “I’ll die if you go … I’ll swallow my tongue and die.” on page 27 follows the theme of corrupting influence of absolute power. In this quote Nana is speaking to Mariam about Mariam leaving with her father the next day because Nana is scared of being left alone and she feels as if Mariam is all she has. So as a result she decides to use her physical problem (epilepsy) that she knows nothing about as leverage to get Mariam to stay at the Kolba with her rather than going out with her father. This is a recurring theme with Nana as she continuously uses the influence and power she has over Mariam to try and make Mariam think that Nana is all she can trust. This just happens to be a great example of that because it was the first time she used “The Jinn” as leverage.

The quote “They laugh at you. They do. I hear them,” on the end of page 14 follows the theme of corrupting influence of absolute power. At this point in the book Nana is saying that to Mariam to influence Mariam’s actions and feelings about Mariam's half brothers after they bring supplies to Mariam and Nana from Jalil. This follows the theme as Mariam truthfully knows nothing about her siblings and from what we’ve seen in the book they treat her kindly even waving hello at her when they come by. But because they are the kids of Jalil and his wives, Nana personally does not like them and treats them horribly, throwing rocks and insults at them. As a result of that and wanting Mariam kind of to herself, she uses the power she has over Mariam at this age to make Mariam treat her half children horribly as well.
