Friday Nov. 13 - War and Peace: "The Things They Carried" Primary and Secondary Blogs (3 total)11/10/2015
Prompt: Think about the items that you carry in your bag (backpack, purse, fanny-pack, man-bag, etc.). Choose two items and explain why you have chosen to "hump" these items wherever you go. What is the tangible and intangible element of each item and why? Then think and write about what these items say about you. Finally, compare yourself to one of the characters in the short story. Who do you most resemble and why?

I also carry around a pen. I feel that it is my lucky pen and it is also my favorite color. I use this pen all the time. I always check to make sure that I still have it because I feel like it's good luck.

I also carry around a hair tie everywhere I go, but my reasoning is different. A hair tie for me represents how I love to keep myself put together. It's interesting though, how the color of the hair tie means something to you. I like your last few sentences, how you compared yourself to Rat Kiley. You made a good comparison between the two and I feel that, the way you explained it, Rat Kiley actually does match who you are.

I like Marcus Lutrells response because I understood and liked how he related it to the book "The Things they carried". In his response he said that he carries a gel pen around to remind him of his own creativity. The he said that he compares himself to the character Rat Kiley because he carried around comic books; this makes me think he is an unrealistic soul who is young and childish. I do not like to live in reality. Rat Kiley tried to mask his reality though comic books and Marcus masked his reality through the use of creativity.

Me, of all the things in my bag or wallet, among them always is a grey and white notebook, the other a business card. Inside this notebook lies a collection of notes gathered from various university lectures on philosophy courses. Originally I created this just so I could create a wealth of knowledge for myself, but overtime this has manifested. Now when I carry it, it is a part of me. It is a direct extension of my knowledge and intelligence. It embodies a great deal of the core foundations I have of ethics, epistemology, and ultimately reality. The other thing I carry, this 'card', is the one given to me by my first Marine Corps recruiter. Although that recruiter has seized to be mine and I have a new one, there is something that draws me to it. Possibly it is my utter love for the Marine Corps, possibly it is my devotion to the United States and that very card contains everything that I have ever dreamed about since being a boy. In times of ill will, I pull it out my wallet and simply read the label "The Few. The Proud" and it reminds me of what I pledged myself to. It reminds me of the oath I swore to uphold when I first enlisted in August.

Your story is very deep. I have nothing but a lot of the respect towards the Marine Corps. Since it seems that you are planning on going to become a great leader over there, I wish the best luck for you. To tell you the truth, I thought about joining the Marines after I met a Marine corps recruiter and did his 20 pull ups challenge. However, after talking to many veterans, including one of my family members, and my mother, step mother, and father, about all the terrible events going on around the world, they rather see me joining a different military branch. I understood what they told me, so I agreed. I support your decision based on your story. I , again, wish you good luck. "The few. The proud. The marines" - USMC.

in my bag I have my things. I have my books and folders. and my personal hygiene items, like deodorant and collone and also lotion this items are what I keep in my backpack. it might not be as person as a solider would keep in his or her pack but it is my person and some thing I carry. I also keep this because it holds a lot of value in terms of that I like to be presentable in front of new people and not a disappointment to some body.

I can relate to you Mr. Stonewall because like you I always carry along my deodorant because as an athlete sometimes you might go out with your friends right after practice and you won't have time to go home and take a shower, that's when a deodorant might come in handy.

you are right and I do share in your struggles and know how it feel to have it in handy when it is most needed like a solider having a picture of someone they or admirer. I hear you and can sympathize.

I can relate with you so much. I always have deodorant and cologne in my school bag because I have gym everyday. i try not to sweat a lot but i have it just in case one day i decide to really do something. I'm not trying to walk around smelling like sh*t.Because to be honest some people just don't care i guess.

One item that I would carry around with me in my bag is my brother’s letters that he sends me from jail. I choose to have his letters because whenever I get upset or mad I just think about him and read his letters. They make me happy and I think about how he wants me to keep my head and become a better person.
audie Murphy

Its ironic how your brother is in jail but whenever you read his letters it makes you feel better. I'd think that it'd be the other way around. But maybe your brother is just really good with words. And about the gold chain? That is so sweet! Of course it's upsetting to find out that late in life that your father is not your biological one, but the fact that he still treats you as if you were his own blood is sweet.

the two main things that I would carry at all times is a switch blade that was tossed down my family and was passed down to me for any type of protection that I need for anything that comes my way. another thing I would carry is a mini journal to keep with me at all times. I would want to keep track of everything that I had experienced.

I can relate myself to your situation because when I was moving here, my grandmother gave me a book to carry with me so I can read it. She told me she has read it and it’s very good for me to read it. I started reading the book as soon as I came here and it was a really book. Even though I don’t carry the book with me wherever I go, I can proudly say that my grandmother gave me this book because of the love she has for me. And for that reason I keep the book in my bed with me always to keep the love in between us stronger.

I can relate to you because when my father died last year all I had left of him was a picture on a shirt. My brother, mother and I left when i was only 4 years old. since then i only seen him twice and i don't remember much of the time we spent together. Now any time i think of him wear my shirt because its the only way i feel close to him again.

Two important items that I carry around in my bag is a picture of my dad, and a picture of my mom. I carry the picture of my dad around because I don't live with him anymore but we still have a strong relationship and it reminds me about him since I cant always see him anymore . I carry the picture of my mom around because she is my world. She has done more than everything for me to grow up as a nice young man .

I can relate myself to your situation because I don’t live with my father and it’s not something I like because I miss him so much but I can’t do anything about it because he lives far away from me and I wish we could see each other someday. And for that reason I also carry a picture of him on my phone and whenever I want to see him I just look at the picture and I become happy. Some days too I might be in bad mood but the moment I look at his picture I will feel at ease.

I can relate to the situation with you dad because although my dad is in my life and i see him ive never had a relationship with him until i found out he got sick. And now i keep a picture of me and him holding me when i was 1 on my computer and above my bed to remind me that he needs help being taken care of. Me being able to take care of him creates a bond between up

Based on your story, you resemble to lieutenant Jimmy Cross because he also carries a photograph of a person he loves. You carry pictures of your mom and dad. I understand why you are doing that, because you barely see your beloved dad in person, so u carry a photo of him. Also, you carry a photo of your mother because she is your world. It is clear you have very strong feelings for your parents. My message to you is to keep the photos with you know matter where you go and keep your strong relationship between your mother and your father.

An item I have chosen to “hump” is a box of S’more pop tarts. I have chosen to “hump” this because I am always hungry and I can eat a pack when I get hungry. But the intangible aspect of me bringing a box S’more pop tarts is that it is my younger siblings favorite snack and it will always remind me of them and make me feel like I am with them. I believe that I am like the character Henry Dobbins because he “carried extra rations;” (O’Brien). I am like Henry Dobbins because like him I would carry extra food because we both like to eat a lot.
Jesse Brown

I can also relate because I also like to carry around food in my book bag because I tend to get hungry throughout the day since lunch is very late. I like to buy snacks from the vending machine everyday. I usually get the popcorn because I think it is good.

Two important things that I carry around with me are probably my chap stick and a hair tie. I "hump" these things around because I hate when my lips get dry and I hate when I want to pin up my hair but have no hair tie.

One of the things that I carry inside my backpack is my math binder. I carried my math binder inside of my backpack since 7th grade. At first, it was a requirement for me to have a binder for my math class from 7th to 9th grade. Now, in the 12th grade, it not a requirement for me anymore to have a binder for my math class. However, I still bring it to class because I realize that it keeps so organize, it is easier for me to look back to note and study for my tests.

Math’s is one of my favorite subjects. I use to hate brining a binder around with me until one day we have a finally exams and all my notes was right there, I saw the importance of a binder. Now I have a binder for not only math’s class because it helps, even though it weights a ton. I am a very organize person because it is easy for me to look back in my blinder and simply find what I am looking for that really makes me happy to know I am not the only one who likes to be organize.

Two things that I carry around that are important to me are probably my lucky pen and my girlfriend's Id. The lucky pen gets me going no matter how boring some lessons I am required to sit at are boring, I feel like every time I write with it a new form of positive energy builds in me which keeps me awake through the lesson. My girlfriend Id is important to me because sometimes when I miss her I just open my wallet and stare at it, looking at the picture on the Id makes me feel close to her no matter how far she might be. These items tells that I am a person who needs motivation sometimes to achieve a goal. I compare myself to Lieutenant Cross because like me he also carries a photograph of a loved one.

In times of war two items I hold dear to me are a pair of earrings which is a family heirloom handed down from mother to daughter for generations. This earrings well seems small to other people but it is of more significance to me than diamonds or even gold. In my point of view it signifies strength which is needed to carry on in the times of war. This heirloom has weathered the storms of years and still beautiful and strong. They help me to fell strong in war times as it helps me to be courageous. Its help me not to feel alone, as when I wear these I feel the generations of women close by me watching over me and protecting me and this help me to feel safe, courageous as well as loved as wars can make you feel so alone.

Two things I carry with me almost every day is my phone and my diary. I carry these with me because it is important to me in many ways like my phone; I use it everywhere I go and in case of emergency. I use my phone to also store important stuff that I may need in some point. Also I store some important memories like pictures of my friends and families. I can’t leave the house without my phone. If I forget my phone in the house, I know the rest of my day will be horrible. My phone is part of my daily living and how my day will go.

If I had to only pick two things to carry with me wherever I go, it would be an album of my entire family and also my older brothers military chain. It’s super important to me to carry along my family album because it shows how much I care about the ones I love and it will automatically approach all the great memories captured in an image. It can also resemble portable happiness whenever I’m going through a rough time and it’s an easy mood lift. The album shows a sequence through out the years of a new member always joining the family. You can also see ups and downs just from the picture, every single picture has it’s own story to tell. It’s just a great way I can think of the past and knowing the future and the present is all well.

An album of your entire family is very important. I think having an album of your entire family can help make sure that you don't ever forget them. It can remind you of home and all of the memories you had with them. It is important to have family because people need to be loved and cared for by others. Without family people will feel unwanted and unloved and no one should feel that way. If I knew I was going somewhere far away from my family for a long time, I would want to carry an album of my family too.

Two things that I carry with me at all times is my phone and wallet. you never know when there's an emergency and you need to call the police or even you're parents. Which is why I don't think schools should block the connections of cell phones, but that's another topic. Another example why I carry my phone with me at all times is to keep contact with friends and family. Who knows if they need you to do something right away and then you don’t have your phone with you, or the other way around, I may need something. For example what if I left my towel in my room, if I didn’t have my phone I wouldn’t be able to text someone to get it for me. I also use it to store things for school, such as notes, due dates, reminders, etc. I also carry my wallet everywhere I go because you never know if you or your friend(s) really need a cold beverage, or like in our case a nice hot coffee. It also comes in handy if you want to take an Uber or cab to school because your parents don't want to take you because they are "tired". There are so much more reasons why my phone and wallet come in handy.I wouldn't know what i would do without these two objects, they're are such life savers. I can relate to Lieutenant Jimmy Cross because just like him he carried letters with him everywhere he went. it relates to me because I'm basically carrying my close friends and family with me in my phone. And as for the wallet, it relates to me as well because he keeps photographs of Martha, and on my phone I keep pictures of my friends and family for the memories.

Two things that I carry is my phone and my lotion. My phone is very important to me because I use it for everything. I use it to contact my friends and family because I am a very social person. My phone can help me communicate with my friends and family to make sure they are safe and doing well. I also use my phone for school when I have look up certain things or when I need to use my calculator. The good thing about it is that I can use it whenever but the bad thing is that it can be very distracting. I keep lotion in my bag because my friend bought me the same kind of lotion for Christmas and it means a lot to me because we have been bestfriends for years. Also the lotion smells really good and I have friends who also like to use my lotion and I like to be there to give them some.

I feel like most people would agree about your idea with carrying a phone. Most people now carry phones with them at all times. They do everything you mentioned with their phones. Phones are very important to people now. People seem to do everything on their phones now. I carry my phone because it allows me to communicate with others. Phones have became something that everyone needs to have because its so easy to carry and it allows you to do so many things.

I carry a letter from ex-girlfriend in my wallet. We haven’t been together for a while now but keeping the letter in there means a lot to me. We barely talk anymore so it reminds of her and our past relationship. I only ever take it out when I want to read it.Reading it brings back a lot of memories. Having it with me all the time makes me feel like she is with me. Carrying that letter still means that I am still not over the fact that me and her are not together anymore. I am like the character, Jimmy Cross because he carries a letter from a girl he loves and cares about. “First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried letter from a girl named Martha” (O’Brien). These letters from her remind him of home and reminds him about the love he has for her.

Two things I carry in my bag that are the most important to me would be my school ID and my house key. My school ID is important to me because it shows the teachers and staff my name , my grade , etc. Figuratively, my ID is my identity. It has my picture but my ID is my ID and no one will have the same ID as me. Second , my house key is important to me. Yes it helps me get inside my house but figuratively , my house key helps me get into a safe environment. It helps me go somewhere where I am comfortable and where I belong. Not just a key that lets me inside my house but a key that I need to make me feel safe.

If I was a soldier in this platoon during the Vietnam War, I would make the decisions to follow the morals of Elias. I chose Sgt. Elias as my leader during this journey because of the characteristics on himself as well as the care of his men. While Sgt. Barns is a strong commander and has intense feelings about winning this war, Sgt. Elias was a man who has great way of combat as well as the factor of warm-heartiness those Barns in lacking. I would feel more drawn into Elias’s energy and then Barns. In war, you are fighting the enemy as well as yourself. You are going through conditions that you have never been through and are in a total new envoiremt. Not counting the fact of balancing survival and killings. Sgt. Barns might care about him men, but cares more about killing Vietnam soldiers and winning this war. Sgt. Elies had morals and helped others. A great example of this represented in the movie Platoon was the scene of the invasion of the village. Both sergeants came looking for evidence of revenge of slaughter of one of their soldiers with rage. In the end of the scene, Sgt. Barns ends of going too far. He commits murder and not just any murder but shoots a woman that was an innocent civilian. He also puts a gun to a child’s head. Sgt. Elies ends up fighting Barns in range of emotions of what he’s doing to these people. To me that’s a person that I would like to call my leader in a Vietnam war, Not Sgt. Barns.

The two things I would bring in my book bag are a Bible and a basketball. The reason I would choose to bring these is because I love basketball I've been playing basketball ever since I was little. This sport has matured me and develops me as a person. The reason why I choose the bible is because I need to have the words of God and if I believe in Jesus Christ anything is possible. I would read it every night and give time to God each and every day he blesses me. I think I am more like Kiowa in the short story because he also brings a Bible but he also carries a hatchet. I can tell what we both have hop in many ways and also have many beliefs. Basketball has also changed my life without basketball I don’t know what kind of person I would be. I think it was meant for me to pick up a ball and play; it keeps me out of a lot of trouble. And having the bible with me only gives more confidence because by Having God, or Jesus you shouldn’t be afraid of anything. Comments are closed.
